Sister’s Night
It started out way back when Mam was sick and myself and the sister K would be coming back from the hospital and we would stop off to discuss what we assumed was the progress Mam was making and go through all the different scenarios. With the 4 of us living together there was a chance we would kill each other so we set aside different nights. There was sister’s night and date night. When the sister K returned to Holland , the tradition stayed and myself and the kid started to have our bonding nights. The difference in sister’s nights now compared to back then. The first part of the night was spent trying to persuade her to leave the pc for 5 minutes so we could watch a movie. Then as she got older, we’d go out for drinks and end up tiddly and depressed and home to bed. She was difficult to handle around that time. I suppose we were both dealing with the loss the best we could. Compare this to the current sister’s night. She’s got really into the kickboxing. She’s talking about taking a syllabus class. Yesterday when we went to our regular Tuesday class it wasn’t our usual instructor, it was one of the tougher guys who really puts you through the paces. The kid got more nervous as I knelt and prayed for the safe repose of our souls, I suppose the sight of me praying did nothing for her confidence and she forgot her inhaler. As it turns out it wasn’t as bad as I thought. It was tough and the kid
did have to sit down and catch her breath and a couple of times but the pre-ordered ambulance may have been a step too far. As always the kid thinks she is invicible AND that she can execute jumping spinning roundhouse kick after just over 2 months of classes. I suppose I was like her when I started. Skip the basics, I want to look like the movie poster. As with every movie espeically the martial arts movie, we need a montage. So next week she’s going to try the double class, the regular one and the syllabus one. We said we’d pay for the second one.
We decided the movie of choice was the Karate Kid, the original. She had never seen it and it was eons since I watched it. It was pointless me making references such as
“Wax on, wax off Daniel son” or
“Paint the fence ”
when she continued to look blankly at me. Which I am used to by the way. I had forgotten a few things, the main one being how scrawny and young Ralph Macchio looked? I mean according to IMDB he was 23 when he made it. I would have said 13. And the woman who played his gf? Elizabeth Shue? 21. Stand the two of them beside each other and she looks like she left puberty way behind whilst poor Daniel son was still painting bum fluff on his upper lip. But its a classic. She wants to see the other ones now as well. The hardcoded Swedish subtitles were a bit off putting as well.
The poor thing has gotten rejected for the grant. Another letter which finally states the actaul reason she was being rejected constantly. If you do a FETAC course and even though you don’t get the grant, and do it through FAS, you’re not entitled to the grant for any other PLC course. Way to encourage people to get back into education. Hopefully if she gets accepted to college, she can qualify then. We do have the college fund but the cost of 4 years college education is a lot. Espeically when Mammy2 might be losing her job in the next few months. We don’t know until towards the end of the month but its a worry. We still have a few loans to clear and were hoping to start saving for a deposit this year. That might need to go on hold. The kid was giving us grief about not having brie and crackers. I refrained from using my mother’s phrase, tis far from cheese and crackers you were reared.
The spring weather is really starting to kick in now that the sleet, snow and gale force winds have cleared. The easter weekend was very funny, funny cause we didn’t leave the couch. We had a nice long weekend. We didn’t have the funds to go away, so we told everyone we were going away, went offline and switched off the phones. It was so relaxing. I managed to get half way through my
Book Thief book AND through Juno’s instruction manual. Juno, for those of you not in the know, is the digital SLR. She is great except in low light conditions when I have to use the flash. The flash fires at least 5 times before it focuses and at that stage your subject is completly blinded. Its a bit offputting to say the least. So I decided to go with the novel idea of reading the instruction manual :O Call me crazy I know! We shall see if this RTFM works.
