The Mammies

Moving on up…

October 4, 2010

The kid has found a flat! After a few disappointements with estate agents not even bothering to ring her back, I went along with her on Sunday to view a place and the landlord seemed happy enough with her so he has a few things to fix up and she can move in by the weekend. I am so chuffed for her. The past month I think has been tough on all of us sharing the apartment. She wants the boyf around all the time, we want our space. Thankfully, things never got violent :) Hopefully she’ll get the keys by the end of the week and we start moving her stuff in. This is all after we spending a fair bit getting her room ready for her to move back in with
us. We just didn’t realise how attached to the boyf she was. There was no way both of them could have lived with us. Our place is too small and I would have been climbing the walls after a few months so this way we’re all happy AND its literally 5 mins away from us so she can swing by whenever she wants. Which she mentioned she may do when she’s looking for mash.

She’s settling into college fine, she had a few moments last week where she panicked. She found out they have a counseller and she’s thinking about seeing her once a week. Whilst she’s doing great with everything that has happened, I do think it wouldn’t do any harm for her to see a counseller once in a while. Now all that’s left to get sorted is her grant, which I’ve done some reading and it sounds like she’s won’t qualify because she’s on the back to education allowance. I won’t get started on the BS that goes along
with a third level education in this country but let me just say its far from free that’s for sure. Thank god we started the college fund a few years ago because there’s no way she’d be able to stay otherwise. Its ridiculous.

In other news I finally got my tatoo. I have been thinking about it for a while, I knew the design I wanted and where I wanted it, its just the timing was never right. So I got it done on Mam’s bday 2 weeks ago. It was sore, but I’ve had worse pain so I just bit my lip and made a few faces. Where there wasn’t as much flesh was a bit sorer. I am really happy with it, it looks exactly the way I wanted it to and in the right place as well. Mammy2 took a pic of it cause if I do want to show people what it looks like I don’t want to have to drop my kecks everytime as its on my left thigh.

College fun and frolics

You tend to forget what a culture shock going to college can be. The kid is into her 2nd week in IADT and still comes home each evening with different stories of what she got up to for freshers week. On Monday, people were forced to eat all sorts of horrible food and vomit it back up. The person who vomited the most got some prize and the respect of everyone else I assume? Yesterday was speed dating. She spent so much time dossing she had to stay late to catch up on her stuff. So far she seems to be enjoying it. The food in the canteen is the criticism she has so last night Mammy2 made veggie lasagne for her to take to college. She was tres happy. Her room sounds nice, she has her own desk and a window which looks out over an orchard where you can to destress. In my day we had a football field. Orchard eh?!

Still she’s happy and she’s getting up every morning so we can’t complain. We ran into some obstacles with her and the boyf over the last week. She’s having a hard time adjusting to living back in with us full time and for the boyf not to be around. We are also having to adjust to living with another adult and sometimes her boyf. We agreed on a compromise but lately she’s been getting panic attacks and so on without him around. We’re a bit worried that she’s so dependent on someone else so when we can
we’re going to try and talk to her about it. In the meantime they are looking for a place themselves. God bless her cottens, but I don’t think she’s too familar with how this whole apartment searching works. She found one she loved, she rang, yes they take students and people on social welfare and so she said she’d get back to them. She thought it would be still available, of course it was gone. It was in a nice area at a reasonable price, they are going to get snapped up. So herself and the man are
going to check some out tomorrow. In the meantime we all try and work with each other so we don’t end up killing each other.

Tonight we’re heading out for Mam’s bday. Not sure what the plan is but we’re heading to a place with a jukebox so we can play all her music. Its guaranteed to clear us an area in the pub anyways :) This is the same establishment I popped on Defying Gravity and earned glares from all the lovely gentlemen at the bar. I shan’t be making that mistake again. Its quite a dangerous thing to do.

Happy Birthday Mam

Horror Movies

September 8, 2010

Myself and the kid love them. Even though we have been treated badly by them in recent years, not since Paranormal Activity have we had a really good scare. So naturally, and rather niavely I feel, we were looking forward to The Last Exorcism. The trailer promised a lot. A lot more then the movie delivered. The thing about the movie was that it didn’t know what it wanted to be. A mockumentary, a scary movie , a thriller, what? It borrowed heavily from The Blair Witch but if you remember the Blair Witch, it was made all the more atmospheric due to the lack of cello players following everyone around the the crescendo getting higher as we headed towards a scary scene. The ending was so abrupt that the majority of the audience reacted with a sigh and a couple of “what a load of shites”. Pretty much summed it up. The kid was incensed. So much so she’s writting a review of it for the website. Next movie which will get us to the cinema will be Paranormal Activity 2. Now that first movie still gives me a new hairstyle whenever I think about it.

But it was sister’s night, so we headed home after ranting about the movie and watched our new fav tv show Rizzoli and Isles, they’re like the new Xena and Gabs. Seriously, the amount of eye-sex these 2 have should be illegal. The kid originally mocked us for watching a cop show with hot women. Now she’s into episode 4. Although how she manages to follow any of it whilst imdbing the guest stars, txting her man and getting munchies is beyond me. Its a talent she must have. Ever since we got her the iphone for her bday, she feels the need to imdb everyone. We could be out for a cocktails, and she thinks she recognises the barman so she’s off to the internet. Its getting whereby its easier to txt her and start a convo then try it face to face. The other day myself and Mammy2 had a missed call from her. Where was she? In the bedroom, she didn’t want to move from the bedroom.

College starts on Monday with a half day and registartion. She has paid the registration fees, 1500 euros. Thank god for the college fund. Its going to cost 1500 a year and then there’ll be field trips, books and so on. Then you read in the papers about how people from working class backgrounds don’t go to college because they can’t afford it? Science of the bleedin obvious more like. Only for I was helped out by the local nuns, I wouldn’t have lasted at college. There was no way Mam could have afforded the various costs. Anyhew, her first week seems to be getting settled in, finding out what classes are on and so on. I told her she has to ring us on Monday evening as we’ll be in Holland and I want to find out how she gets on with her first day.
